This week I celebrated my 3 year anniversary at my current job. Prior to that in my motherhood life anyway I had a variety of part time jobs, a full time job, ran my own small digital marketing firm and even prior was a pretty full time stay at home mom. Seems like a lot, but I’ve been a mom for 20 years, so I had a lot of time to try different things. But an opportunity fell in my lap with a great group and I couldn’t say no. So I didn’t.
90% of the time I love my job. But there have been days, weeks and even months that I am in a rut and I have found it hard to find the balance. The balance for family, the balance for friends, the balance for the house and the balance for me. Thinking this week that it has already been 3 years made me realize I need to do better at this, even though I’ve come a long way. Here’s what I hope to focus on in the next 6 months to help me find the balance of all of the things!
- Be more flexible. I have a ton of flexibility with my job. I know this and appreciate it and love it. But sometimes I don’t feel as flexible with the rest of my life. If I plan to do something one day, I generally just do it. I need to sometimes let go more and go with the flow.
- Read more. I have already begun this and plan on continuing this trend. I have not been a great reader over the last 2 decades and this will change. I also have given myself permission to not finish a book if I don’t ike it. I rarely have done this before and think that has something to do with not reading as much. But no more! Right now I am reading A Man Called Ove and so far, so good!
- Try new things. Take this margarita for example. Everyone knows I love a good margarita. I tend to be boring and get the same thing each time, a plain margarita on the rocks with no salt. Why? Because it is great! But just recently on a whim I said, frozen strawberry please. And ya know what? It was fabulous! I think in generally I want to get a bit deeper than my drink of choice at Happy Hour, but it is a start.
- Cook new recipes more. Talk about a rut! I fairly recently have gotten much better at this and plan on continuing this trend. One of my newer (to me) favorite sites & cookbooks is Skinnytaste and I have enjoyed making these recipes. I think sometimes I just don’t have the time to find new ideas and recipes, but I do, I just need to remember it is part of the balance.
- Exercise. Yeah, just about every one has this on their list. I can’t stand to work out. Not at all. I have to find something I like to do and just move more. I need more balance in this area in more ways than once, because I pretty much can’t balance. :0 Ha!
- Get out and enjoy where I live more. I live in Colorado. Need I say more? I haven’t explored nearly enough and I am already making plans that will change that.
I do think that as I become more aware of some of the things that I am doing outside of work I will begin to find a better balance and continue to make that flexibility work well for me!
