2024 was a great reading year for me where quality won over quantity. I did complete 88 books, which is still a lot, but did not get near my 100+ of years past. And that is ok! Reading is a hobby that I enjoy to spend much of my time with, and sometimes I just need a break. The last 3 months of this year slowed way down for me with attention span and I did find myself reading a bit less than normal and cozied up on the couch to watch more tv than normal for me with my husband. I enjoyed the shows Presumed Innocent, The Bear’s new season, The Diplomat, and of course Survivor.
Of my 88 completed books, there were also a good number of DNFs but I don’t count those. Within those there are a small handful that I may go back to at a later date because while they weren’t right for me right now, I think there is a chance I may enjoy them in the future. Timing can be everything when it comes to reading!
I tend to read much more fiction than non-fiction, but like last year, I decided to separate them out in my tops list and here are my top nonfiction books that I read. I did have a 2024 goals list – 24 books I hoped to read. This year I did not complete as many of these as I have in the past – I completed 10 of them. I haven’t yet decided if I will make a 2025 Goals list or not, I seem to be gravitating more to spur of the moment reading decisions lately. However, I do like the idea of picking some that I want to keep my eye on. I did request less ARCs (advanced reader copies) in 2024 and that was a good decision, especially for the last half of the year. I thought I would continue that trend but the shiny squirrels have distracted me and I already have 22 ARCS in my queue (with 2 already complete) and 9 more requested waiting for approval. So while it seemed like a good idea, that’s already quite a bit I will be reading for sure. I do want to make more time to read some older books from my shelves – both my bookcase in my office and my kindle shelf. There is a lot of dust gathering on these bad boys and it is time to dust that off.
Here are my top 25 fiction books of 2024. Honestly, I would have been comfortable posting 35 or so – as there are many other great ones I loved. Not surprising, I have several repeat authors that have been favorites in the past. And also like year’s past, this collection of 25 is a bit all over the place – there’s historical fiction, romance, contemporary fiction, and thrillers/suspense. I also want to note that one of the titles won’t be released for a few more weeks, Penitence. All of these books listed I rated 4’s or 5’s.
